The current Bodie Island Lighthouse is the third that has stood in this vicinity of Bodie Island on the Outer Banks in North Carolina. The current lighthouse was remodeled in 1872, after the previous edition was destroyed in the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, when Confederate soldiers on a covert operation entered the lighthouse area and blew up the tower to prevent the Union Army from using it as lookout tower.
It stands 156 feet (48 m) tall and is located on the Roanoke Sound side of the first island that is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The lighthouse is just south of Nags Head, a few miles before Oregon Inlet. It was renovated from August 2009 to March 2013, and was made climbable by the public.
Bodie Island Lighthouse, as far as we know is relatively spook-free, however the old gatekeeper's cottage, where the gift shop is located has a bit of a scary story. Nearly every afternoon, shortly after 4:00 PM someone or something knocks from behind the massive bricked-over fireplace.
This lighthouse decoration is a quaint little model of the original. Serving as a perfect compliment to any room’s beach décor theme, this Bodie Island Lighthouse is perfect for shell-collectors or beach-lovers alike.
