Ihis style of sword is patterned after the 1833 French Navy boarding cutlass. This weapon was a favorite of pirates in the Caribbean in the 19th century.
This pirate mermaid cutlass is a sailor's dream! The hand-guard is a basket-style cupped guard with an intricately cut out design of ships rigging and a mermaid. The handle is solid steel with a patterned steel design.
The scabbard is made of real hardwood with a black dull gloss finish and shiny highlights. The drag (tip of the scabbard) is shiny brass embossed with two crossed guns. The scabbard throat is also brass emblazoned with a skull and cross bones on one side, and two crossed swords on the other. The blade of the sword is 440 stainless steel with a slightly sharpened edge.
A temper line runs the length of the blade, known as the 'blood line'.
The Cutlass was a short slashing sword, ideal for the close-quarters battles aboard great sailing men-of-war. Generally regarded as a pirate weapon, the cutlass was, in fact, issued to the Naval personnel of many countries, including the United States. From the Civil War onwards, for over 75 years, the U.S. Navy adopted this style of cutlass which was reported to still be in the arm racks of ships in World War II.
Fully wearable, this sword makes a great decorative piece for the sword collector, theatrical use, costuming, and ceremonies.
