The year IX or "The Pistolet modèle An IX" was a flintlock cavalry pistol in service in French units from 1801. It was eventually replaced by the year XIII pistol, which was introudced in 1806. The Pistolet modèle An IX was designed to equip mounted units, each horseman using two pistols. It was used in most mounted units of the Consulat and during the early years of the Empire, as well as in the Navy.
In battle this pistol was used both for volley fire and close quarter fighting with other cavalry. As well it proved useful in inflicting harm on packed enemy infantry defensive squares. While another, lighter pistol began to be manufactured in 1807, the "AN IX" pistol continued to be used in Napoleon's cavalry until the end of the Empire in 1815.
This is an exquisite reproduction similar to an 1802 model that is currently displayed at the Vevey Historical musem.
This reproduction is a copy of one manufactured in St. Etienne and marked on the lock plate as such with "Manufacture imperiale de St. etienne"
This elegant pistol features a working flintlock mechanism and trigger, which means you can rotate the frizzen, cock the hammer, and even pull the trigger, releasing the flint to create the distinctive 'clink' of a typical flintlock pistol. Please note that this is a replica pistol and that in spite of any moving parts or working mechanisms, it cannot be converted into a working firearm. Made from european hardwood, and two-toned metal.
