Shut the box is a dice based strategy game of chance for one or more players, The games components include a counting box with nine number tiles, and a pair of standard six sided dice. Players take turns rolling the dice and flipping down tiles, and recording their score.

The game seems to have achieved popularity in the 19th century when it was played by Hudson's Bay Company sailors. However, descriptions of the game go back as far as the 12th century, when it was popular among sailors on the English Channel.

Today  it is often  associated with pirates, yet there are no actual written accounts of pirates playing the game. However, since most pirates began their careers as merchant or naval sailors, it isn't hard to speculate and imagine Edward Teach, aka "Blackbeard" hoisting a flagon and playing a few rounds.

This handcrafted deluxe version is finished in all-natural amber shellac and  features an intricately detailed nostalgic handcrafted  word-burned "scrimshaw" image of a tallship  and two stars to steer her by on the box cover. The box features brass hinges and a felt playing service. The game includes two dice and all instructions.   The game of "shut-the-box" will bring tons of fun and excitement for your next pirate encampment, family game night, or social activity.

Note: Due to the handcrafted construction, there may be some slight variation in appearance and colour.
