Cleaning, Storage  and Care of Glassware

  • Glass is sensitive to changes in temperature. To avoid potential cracks, don't immerse cold glass in hot water.
  • Always add water before adding ice cubes. This will allow the glass to adjust to the temperature of the ice cubes and prevent the possibility of cracks.
  • To release glasses stuck together, fill the top glass with cool water and set the bottom glass in warm water. The cool water causes the upper glass to contract and the warm water expands the lower glass. After a few minutes the glasses should separate. Do not try to pull dry glasses apart!
  • In dishwashers, do not jam glassware onto the racks. The force of water causes vibrations that may cause tightly stacked glassware to hit one another and chip.
  • The mineral deposits in some tap water can affect the clarity of glass. Minerals are found in hard water or in chemicals used to treat water. When the minerals combine with the chemicals in detergent and the heat of a dishwasher, a reaction occurs that leaves a permanent film on glass. If you have extremely hard or treated water, stop the dishwasher before the heated drying cycle or turn off the heated dry feature in you dishwasher if the model allows.
  • Flowers change the chemical composition of water dramatically. To avoid permanent discoloration or etching of glass vases, change water daily.
  • Spots, haziness, and iridescence can be removed or diminished when white vinegar is added to the rinse water. You can also try soaking the article in water and white vinegar.
  • Store infrequently used glassware in a covered box or case with dividers, or in a cabinet located away from kitchen grease.
  • To keep glass grease-free, rotate them, bringing unused glasses to the front periodically.
  • Store glassware only after it is cool and completely dry. When glass is damp or warm, moisture collects on the surface and a film often forms that can be difficult to remove.
  • Temperature changes cause glass to expand and contract. To avoid chips, leave enough space between the rims of stemware to allow for expansion and contraction. Make sure the bases do not touch. Provide space between glassware and the sides of your storage cabinet.
