This is a replica of the 19th century-style pirate cutlass patterned after the 1833 French Navy boarding cutlass. This weapon was a favorite of pirates in the Caribbean in the 19th century.
This sword features a fully brass cupped handguard (hilt) with an engraving of a three masted galleon. The 440 stainless steel curved blade measures 23" long. The Pommel and grip are cast metal in steel finish.
The scabbard is covered in "faux" leather and features detailed brass hardware, at throat and at the tip. The overall length is approx. 28"
The Cutlass was a short slashing sword, ideal for the close-quarters battles aboard great sailing men-of-war. Generally regarded as a pirate weapon, the cutlass was, in fact, issued to the Naval personnel of many countries, including the United States. From the Civil War onwards, for over 75 years, the U.S. Navy adopted this style of cutlass which was reported to still be in the arm racks of ships in World War II.
Fully wearable, this sword makes a great decorative piece for the sword collector, theatrical use, costuming, and ceremonies.
